Zoom Alternatives

toying with the idea if an external recorder, but not necessarily at Zoom prices.

Any suggestions?

Cheers!

I've had a Tascam dr-2d for about 5 years now. Their newer equivalents are considerably cheaper and apparently just as good quality.

However at about £75 they're not exactly cheap next to the zoom H1

interesting topic, looking around too. I even tried to record with my samsung phone which was pretty decent but not a real solution as a setup

I use a Rode SmartLav+ microphone connected to my iPhone recording through the Rode Rec app, which has a miriad of settings including Clipping, Bit-rate, Mic Gain and Izotope sound processing. It can also record stereo via a splitter, but I don't have a second mic yet. The mic cost me $69 AUD and the app $7 AUD.

I also have an unopened Audio Technica ATR-3350iS lav mic sitting around at home that I bought for $40 off eBay. Apparently its a good mic, but I quite like the Rode setup I've got at the moment.

same here, i have two mic's connected to the drift but i do would love to tryout an external recorder

at the moment it's an easy setup, i only need to connect my 'jacket' with the cable coming from my helmet and both mics are good to go

oh yeah, that's something i worry about. What i wanted to try out is hooking up the external voice recorders line-out to the drift, if that would work, happy days!

I started out with an external recorder, but got fed up with the syncing and having to remember to push 2 record buttons. I forgot a few times and it really sours your mood when you realise too late!

Then I got a Drift and dropped the sound recorder.

Now I'm going back to the sound recorder because I want more bike noise but it does make it an extra faff to make sure the batteries are full, memory card is empty etc...

I'm looking to try and get something a bit smaller to streamline the operation!!

C&C - I wanted to do both, voice and ambient, although I could blend voice from camera with ambient from another recorder. For a ride out, where you're not talking, the camera mics don't give you enough.

I just flashed the drift Ghost HD to their latest firmware (even though the patch notes say noting about microphone changes) and plugged in their own microphone which I replaced the wind shield on it with a more solid one. Now I tucked this into the cheek pad and put the mic setting on level 2 or 3 (had to be on 1 before) and I can now get good voice and ambient noise too.

As you say it is a lot less hassle.

I didn't change the mic level, although I also didn't notice any change in the audio when I edited it up.

No i meant a second voice recorder like, then having to sync it up with the footage.

Try syncing 2 camera and an external mic every time!

Sorry I can't reply to everyone, the forums are messed up on this account. It works fine on a new test account I made for some reason.
