Hi chaps

I was just wondering which insurance companies you all use? I am currently paying £1050 for my first years insurance on my Honda NSR. This sounds pretty damn steep but my parents would only let me have a motorbike on the condition that i was covered by full comprehensive and that was the cheapest quote i could find by a long shot! I have no criminal convictions, no points on my lincence and nothing else along those lines but despite that all my quotes seem much higher than other people seem to suggest there's are?

For example. Earlier i filled in one of those comparison websites assuming i had got my licence and was trying to insurace a CBR 600 F (old one) The cheapest quote i could get was around £4000... Im sure non of the other 17/18 year olds with 600s pay that much? I'm so confused so any help would be appreciated as i'm trying to figure out what i might be able to afford when I've done my test.

You might be surprised. I'm over in America, but I have heard people on the Sv forums telling many stories about why they ride an sv650 and most say its due to insurance hikes on the ;sport bike' market over there. All i know from personal experience is that we have it easy - much easier to get our license, and cost to insure is much less.

Maybe take dave's advice and look into the gpz5 series and see what that insurance would run ya.

Thanks for the advice, i will have a look into those kind of bikes and see what comes up :)

I was 20 when I got my first bike, with no driving license. Sachs XTC 125 TPFT = £700 as main mode of transport.

Bought my CBR 600F (01 Fi model) a year after, with 1 year no claims and still no driving license (also no points) = Fully comp £600 as main mode of transport (both quotes annual)

Various things influence quotes, so you may just be unlucky in some of the following:
-age
-location (a big factor in things like theft etc)
-time of day you use the comparison sites (search during off peak times for better quotes)
-class of bike - the cbr F's are either sports touring or super sports depending on different insurers

XJ6s (600cc), 26 years old, 1st year riding, 1 years car licence but no "no claims". Owner of car, 5000 mile limit, no pillions.

Quotes on confused.com were around the 1100 - 1300 mark.

In the end I found bikesure would do it for 800ish.

1 year no claims, 27 yrs old renewal was 650 fully comp. Best deal I could find.

MCE are the worst insurer to go with. Its cheap for a reason.

Now i bet if you had chosen 3rd party it would have only cost you around £400.

If your going to go with any insurer, look around google for a honda insurer. They will give you the best deal.

£1050 for a 125. Is a bit of a joke, I choose MCE for my 50 it was £250 for the year fully comp and when I asked to cancel they declined my right to cancelation, they said they because I had not been with them for a mandtoriy amout of time. I waited untill this had passed and it took 3months for me to get a refund of the rest of the money I was owed. & they still charged me a admin fee of cancelation.

May i ask how much you paid for the bike?

Dont get insurance that cost more than the bike its pointless, im with CIA insurance (Suzuki) insurer. & i can do as many modifications as i feel like aslong as it doesnt improve performance, & in the event of a crash they will repair it to factory condition. & ive got coverage for everything inc european cover.

Let this year run out, change insurer.

My 100cc scooter first year with no NCB (No Claims Bonus) was a couple of hundered quid 3rd party only
My YBR125 with one years NCB was £180 third party only
My bandit600S will be around £750 fully comp with two years NCB

My mate who lives in the same road as me and is a year or two older with one years NCB has got on a thundercat and is paying just over a grand just for TPFT only.

It mainly depends on the type of bike you have, how many NCB's you have and where the bike is kept.

Also you could look at doing a ikesafe course whiche can reduce your premiums
Keep it in the garage
tell your insurance you will do less miles on it (3k a mile I think is the cheapest

I payed £1200 approx but had to have work done. Yeh i know, i got ripped off... But it's better to just enjoy what you got than regret it and feel bad about it becasue then you get nothign from it at all. Next time i buy i bike i will be a lot more cautious and know what to watch out for.

I can assure you i spend hours and hours trying to get a good quote, a lot of them were £3000 or more... My bike is garaged and alarmed. I looked at lal the websites people suggested where they got the same bike insured for just over half what i payed for mine but i couldnt get the smae quote. I live in a small countryside villiage and i wouldnt say crime is high around here... Unfortunatally my bike is classed as super sports. I seem to remember my best quote for TPTF was around £350-£400 but like i said, dad wouldnt let me ride it without comprehensive

That sounds like you had a pretty rubbish time with MCE so i'll stay weary, i've been carefull to record everything they've sent me and stuff to make sure i have proof of exactly what im covered for. I'm hoping my quote will go down a lot once i have my 1 year no claims.

Lots of interesting stuff on this thread.

Can't believe you'd pay over a grand on a 125. Just doesn't seem right.

My 50 was something like 200 quid tpf&t.
250 was £500 with one years no claims
Went down to 300 quid after another years no claims.
My versys was 600 quid on 2 years no claims
And finally my cbr is 650 quid on 3 years no claims. I'm paying more like 750 though because I'm doing it monthly this time.

I'd seriously look at third party fire and theft dude. You dont need fully comp. Not for that price.

Yeh, i wish my insurance was that cheap :/ I think i'll start looking again for a new quote, when i'm 18 in Jan i could change to third party without my dad giving me an earful. I would say i wish i'd started on a YBR or somthing much cheaper to insure... but i have to be honest, the NSR is awsome and i love owning it as well as riding it :) in theory i could get 27bhp out of it derestricted so wouldnt have to buy a new bike before my two year restriction ends but we'll see... will probly need a top end rebuild as it's approaching 20K

*sigh* why is insurance so pricey :(

Thanks for this, i didnt realise the time of day affected it!

Looking for insurance can be a pain and take a while, usually phoning an asking is usually the best deal.

Depending on how new your bike was i would have choose a fully comp bike because you could just trade againts a 600 or whatever bike u get next. If it was 3years old fully comp was a bad idea.

Im sure you know how insurance works, but if your slighlty mechanicaly minded you could fix your bike yourself in the event of a crash if no other 3rd parties where involved.

Insurance can be pretty high depending on.

- area you live in
- how many miles you put down to do
- what you use the bike for
- the bikes value
- any modifications
- age
- experiance

Loads of factors. Look very hard on your next insurance.

Search on the comparison sites and then phone them direct to see if they can beat it, still I have 8 years no claims on my car, first year riding with pillion (no difference in cost) with recovery £400 fully comp.

I disagree with "manufacturer specific" insurers giving you the best deal.

At least the following manufacturers all use the same insurer.

Suzuki - CIA insurance
Yamaha - CIA insurance
Kawasaki - CIA insurance

My yamaha quotes cost the most from these guys. By far the cheapest and best deal (helmet & leather cover, unlimited mileage) was from searching online and ending up with bikesure.

CIA insurance also had the hardest sell (wouldn't let me hang up, said that unless I took the quote now the yamaha discount would no longer apply, etc...) and the worst customer service I experienced of all the companies I rang for a quote.

Granted it was just one phone call but it stuck in my memory for a reason.

Why do you have fully comp?

If you don't need the bike to live, and it's not brand new... Just don't bother.

I went fully comp as my bike was on finance. When the finance ends I'm switching to tpft.

Why do your parents request you to be fully comp? Sounds a bit mental tbh. 125's have a massive premium, highly wanted in thefts, ridden by learner riders so crashed more. It's understandable why your quotes are so high, it's a high risk bike with a new rider on it.

Me on the bandit, 1 year NCB (1 month short of 2 years grrr) was £448 TPFT, would have been at least £800 fully comp, may go for that next year when it should be more reasonable!

Right, with CIA insurance I can get plain old third party for just over £400 or TPFT for about £600. The money i'd save would be enough to rebuild my engine to an 'as new' condition!

Just tried to discuss this with my father and got the usual kind of response. If i don't have fully comp insurance, he wont allow me too keep the bike 'on his property' ...What an ignorant ****. This rubbish comes from a man whole locks food in a safe at home to stop me and my siblings eating it...

Ask him why? And let us know.

Because fully comp only means your bike gets repaired aswell as F&T.

Choosing TF&T Would be only if you could afford to fix the bike yourself.

No point in choosing fully comp on a 2k bike.
