Restarting a fresh?! Would you?

Relaunched the Channel -JustTomTorque
Hi all, it's been a while. So I've decided to try and get back into vlogging again and my first port of call to come for advice and direction is here.
I'll try and keep it basic, I fell out of love with trying if I'm honest, I couldn't find what was right for me, I couldn't find a formula that worked and I was sick of trying to get the edits to look good, sound good and be presentable. So, with some video's having more than 12k views, I completely revamped. This was on the advice of a friend of mine that used to promote bands.

So what did I do.. I ghosted all the videos I'd done in the past, I recreated the name to JustTom Torque (from Brotherhood of Biking), I simplified the thumbnails to all look similar and I tried to do something that no one else was doing. I call it the 6 min review. There is no riding, so there is no issues with mics and camera wobble. I talk in 3x 2mins about the bike. First part is what is it, how much and what do you get, 2nd part is a quick 2min whip around the bike (and car(s)) and the final 2mins is simply summing it up.

I find this format keeps it focused, short enough to keep people interested and best of all its easy enough to edit and still have fun with.

So I guess my Q is this, are there many of you out there that have done the same? Completely started afresh? What lessons were learn and what advice would you give to someone who has just taken the leap!

Great to be back, cheers.
Tom

Hi Tom, so not really motovlogging at all, just reviews then?
Bike reviews get loads of views, so if you have access to enough bikes, you could be onto a winner if that is a route that makes you happy.
My motovlogging channel is my start again channel. On my old one I posted airsoft and PC gaming vids, it didn't get many views, but helped me learn a little on video editing.
You gotta go with what makes you happy as a creator.

I did rename my channel few years ago and with that created kind of a travelling theme to the channel. I deleted or unlisted a lot of older videos. Now it has only been a few years, so currently there is more footage of just motovlogs than actual travelling (and we did not have a travelling year at all, this season), but I don't really feel I need to do the motovlogs. I only do them when I want to do them. So that gives me kind of the relaxed attitude towards the channel, I want. And I don't chase many views. I like if there are some people who like some of what I post. If there would be tons of viewers, I'd probably start feeling pressure to deliver.

That's a great attitude to have and one I wish I could say I'm the same with. I think that it is all too easy to get caught up in the "look at me" at times. In all honesty, I do believe I'd be better on a podcast talking to folk than on the videos.
I have a friend who travels vlogs. He is away from family and friends and does it just to keep everyone up to date on where he is in the world. Looks great fun.
The reset was hard to do, I won't lie but if it clears up the channel and gives it some uniformity, then I think it's worth a punt.

It comes down to personal choice really. It has often crossed my mind not to restart the channel but maybe remove some of the early day crap stuff.

Good luck with the plans.

But if you ever hit it big the early crap stuff is fun to watch and will get views Doug de Muro comes to mind.

But yeah I get it - if people look at what is a terrible video, terrible sound etc they may assume all your content is like that and get scared off.

Absolutely, think I may thin the catalogue soon.

I like your idea of short standardized bike reviews, sounds like a good concept.

My channel is only eight months old and it's my first YouTube channel so I'm still learning as I go. No desire to rebrand or change things yet, doubt I ever will as motovlogging is just a fun hobby for me. I'll pretty much do whatever floats my boat with my channel whenever I feel like it, LOL!

Been thinking about it myself. I'm just not into posting motovlogs anymore, so I'm thinking maybe going down a different route, with the things I'm doing in life now. So more of a life vlog than anything else. There would still be plenty of motorcycle content, but I would hope that doing different things might just open the channel up to a wider audience.

Thanks for the comments guys, really appreciate you taking the time to reply. I would like many would love to do well but it's a cut thoat industry where all you need is that one lucky break. It was hard resetting, but those videos I made are only ghosted. Hopefully one day I'll have the followers and nerve to put them back out there. Finding your own way is difficult, hence me doing my own thing. It is weird though not actually riding on the video!

I also think it's cool to keep those old videos in your back pocket (either on the channel or unlisted for later), because it is fun to see how you adapt/change your videos as you advance in vlogging and video content creation in general. Sometimes it's the journey and not the destination that is fun to look at. :-)

I started doing drone stuff too - which initially picked a good nuber of views and subs , but it didnt work out well as when I posted a bike vid or two I started loosing subs - turns out there is not as big a crossover with bikes and drones as I imagined . I am not trying to keep it all bike related as best I can

I think the problem is that drone stuff generally slows the video footage, where as most people in the Motovlogging game use cutting techniques to make the footage more snappy.

Definately the journey speaks volumes. Life ain't all blowjobs and rainbows as my tshirt says.

I actually ment I did some videos about drones - and tapped into the drone user crowd wich is big , but they dont seem to be into bikes as well so the duel content worked against each other if you know what I mean

I get what you mean pal. I have heard the drone market and viewing troops can be big.

I'd like to simply use a drone to get aerial footage of places / roads I'm riding for B-roll and stuff. I doubt I'd use the drone very often but it still would be sweet to utilize even if minimally.

Yeah that would be my use of a drone and so cannot justify the price tag.

Yeah, I don't want to spend any money on my channel unless it's actually making me some in return, but as a fun toy I'd still love to buy a drone. I've always loved photography so doing some aerial photography and filming is super appealing to me.

Maybe I should start a 2nd YouTube channel for drone footage to justify the expense to myself, LOL!!! Take some scenic beautiful aerial footage, use the editing skills I've learned motovlogging to make nice videos, put some relaxing soft music to them, instant drone channel. Of course there are probably thousands of channels just like that out there...

I too would like to get a drone, just for B-roll like Mengy there.

My channel is NOT growing the way I want it to, but I use it to tie videos into my web site, which includes the aforementioned videos, as well as typed-up stuff that I find interesting.

I use my various platforms to express my creativity, try new things, and basically blog/vlog. If nobody wants to watch it, oh well. If a bunch of people decide to sub and follow, that's even better.

If it were to replace my day job, well that would just be swell... if/until then, it's a hobby.
