Awesome, yeah I've done a few North and South Island trips, awesome scenery everywhere you go. Im from Wellington, so very close to the Hutt, its great because as you say, good starting point for a South Island trip, provided the 3 hour ferry ride isn't too bumpy and turns into an 8 hour trip!

Yep, its 'Windy Welly' indeed however, when the weathers good, the ferry ride is amazing, you spend half of it in the Marlborough Sounds which is an amazing part of our country.
