Ride of the Century occurred last weekend in St. Louis, wondering if you had any disturbance?

I personally don't recommend this type of riding, and wouldn't ever catch myself doing wheelies down the interstate. However, it does make for some interesting videos. Thought I would share just 'cause.

Yeah, there were a lot of complaints in the newspaper and on local news. Some riders rode respectably and some were d-bags.

A motorcyclist participating in a weekend event remained in critical condition Sunday after being struck by a truck Saturday.
James Ruma, 32, of De Soto, was among the large packs of motorcycle riders who took to area roads over the weekend as part of an annual event in St. Charles County called Ride of the Century.
The event prompted hundreds of complaints to local police from people calling to report the riders performing stunts such as wheelies and standing up on their bikes on area roadways.
The cyclists, most on Japanese sport bikes, were en route to a gathering Saturday held at the Big St. Charles Motorsports dealership in St. Charles.
At 2:50 p.m. Saturday, Ruma was driving westbound on Interstate 270 east of Halls Ferry Road when he stopped his bike on the side of the highway and attempted to retrieve a backpack on the highway, according to a traffic crash report by the Missouri Highway Patrol.
Ruma was struck by a 1999 Ford F350 pickup truck, according to the report. The driver of the truck had minor injuries. Ruma was taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital by helicopter.
James Ruma's brother, Brock Ruma, said Sunday that James suffered severe trauma to the lower half of his body and a ruptured artery in his right leg. James Ruma suffered multiple fractures and was under sedation. "He's fighting," Brock Ruma said of his brother's condition. James Ruma, a mechanic, is married and has a daughter.
Cpl. Jeff Wilson of the Highway Patrol said a handful of motorcyclists after the accident were given citations for non-moving violations involving registration or expired drivers licenses. Wilson said he could not confirm the number of motorcyclists who were riding with Ruma when the accident occurred.
A St. Louis-based group of stunt riders called the Streetfighterz founded the annual Ride of the Century event in 2002, which attracts riders from across the country. Pictures from the event posted on a Facebook page this weekend show some riders wearing T-shirts and sweatshirts saying, "We came to stunt."
"We had a lot of people calling about them doing tricks and stunts," said St. Louis County police dispatcher Scott Hogberg. Despite drawing the ire of other motorists, few, if any, tickets were issued against the cyclists for moving violations. "We had no real issues," Hogberg said.
Several local police departments received calls from motorists with complaints about the motorcyclists driving erratically and blocking traffic.
Frontenac police Sgt. Craig Picha said his department sent squad cars to Highway 40 (Interstate 64) Saturday afternoon after receiving complaints from motorists.
"Anytime you have a large group like this, you're going to get a lot of calls," Picha said.
Picha described the motorcyclists as "orderly" while they traveled westbound on Highway 40 through Frontenac's city limits. "We went to show a presence and had no tickets or summons," he said.
The St. Charles County Sheriff's Department also had no arrests or other contact with the motorcyclists over the weekend, dispatcher Jani Albright said Sunday.
Albright said the department was not contacted by the motorcycle group about the event and did not provide any street or crowd control assistance. "We don't have that kind of manpower," she said.

This is why I hate the majority of sport bike riders. I'm a big fan of having fun and showing off. I get that. Mile long wheelies.. sure they have their place. Power slides.. ya i understand. But riding like a tool x 200 riders just spells disaster for at least one. This is why cagers give no respect sometimes. (/rantdone)

I love the videos though. nice to see they have some gear on too. I want to have the skill at riding straight that they have.

Thanks for sharing that Matt. Yeah I was wondering if there had been any accidents due to the large number of crazies on the road.

And yes C90, I agree with you completely. Everything has their time and place, but I really frown upon doing dangerous acts in public and causing disturbance when there are people around that you can potentially harm. Especially when that moron was riding in oncoming traffic. I'm glad, though, that their stunts on the highway were away from heavy commuter traffic.

Main Entry: herd
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: large group
Synonyms: assemblage, bevy, brood, clan, collection, covey, crowd, crush, drift, drove, flight, flock, gaggle, gathering, hoi polloi, horde, lot, mass, mob, multitude, nest, pack, people, populace, press, rabble, school, swarm, throng
Notes: a herd is a group of wild animals of one species that remain together

I like rabble, A Rabble of Squids.

I wouldn't take part in that, to reckless. I have been on group rides with over 3'500 bikers, but we had police escorts, roads closed to traffic and no one was irresponsible. On the 18th of June there were 80,000 biker in the streets of France, not one accident.

Big group rides are fun, but you need the approval/help of local police & strict organization, not being a Squid is also imperative.

If police escorts get involved next year, I have a feeling the turnout will be less because a lot of people just want to hit the streets to show off their highway wheelies and stunts.

Unless...the police allowed for space to be around this large group in which they can still do their stunts but at their own risk...eliminating other highway commuter traffic for about 20 minutes in each section.

Since the event doesn't seem to have any positive attribution to society besides getting a bunch of rowdy motorcyclists together, I doubt the police would allow for the highway to be blocked off for them.

+1
I doubt they would chance the accidents and then have to clean it up. after all, its hard to pick up your bike when you have no flesh :-/

I'm 100% with you Toast, I would not be in that group.
I do agree with you regarding "a bunch of rowdy motorcyclists together", that's not good.
Also "doesn't seem to have any positive attribution to society" It looked like they were just out to upset people.

They could have organised a nice ride out, with no silly stunts.

The cops in France don't allow any wheelies or stunts, you would get arrested & the bike impounded, but they are cool in regards to mass groups of riders, as long as we are all well behaved. The cops did close the highways in France, I have been on many charity rides, and if it is well organised and legal, all traffic stops.

If a collective of cows is a herd what the collective name for a group of squids??

A group of squids is called a "school" - Thats the offical marine name

Here in aus what i know we call a group of squids ( like in this video) is preschool

for example.

look at the guys with no gear on, FU&Kn pre-Schoolers

This is pretty much all this event is. I know 2 fellows that ride in this and they fit the stereotype spot-on. They just can't contain this shyt in a secluded parking lot, they gotta ram it down Joe Public's throat - as in SEE ME MOFO - WATCHA GONNA DO ABOUT IT!

I can see why cars were calling to complain:

High speed passes on the right, high speed rolling burnouts just feet away from cars, etc. Not to mention that standard lanesplitting tends to make cars jealous and upset and they misinterpret it as "reckless." And these guys WERE doing it recklessly. Lame. One of the biggest differences (besides gear) between squids and hooligans is that hooligans (despite the connotations of the name) actually show care and respect for public safety, while still having a bit of fun and taking a looser interpretation of the rules of the road. Poor St. Louis just got squid overload. :( And, of course, they've just gone further to hurt the public misconception about motorcyclists.

Funny that the guy disabled comments on his video. I bet he was getting called out more than he was getting the props he was looking for.

Just WOW! I would not object to a few of those morons taking a bullet in the helmet from a few pissed-off motorists. This is the kind of crap that gives all of us a very bad image in the public's eyes, and makes our insurance rates go sky-high.

edit... I watched this again and noticed the "absence" of license plates on many of the bikes, hmm....
