goPro mount on a "rippled" helmet? *Last comment with pics

g'day

at the moment I have my gopro mounted on the snout of my helmet. I would really like to have it on the side of my helmet but my Arai doesn't seem to be the best shape for it. It has ripples through the perfect mounting position leaving some of the contact points untouched. I was thinking of putting the mount on, then filling the gaps with generous amount of hot glue. The side of my helmet has plastic covers where the innards of my removable visor sit and does have some movement. With a bit of wind I fear it may fall off.

That looks like a tricky one. Hot glue is going to work though... I guess it will be permanent?

I'd advise against hot glue, you never know what that could do to the integrity of the shell itself. Provided you don't mind permanently altering the helmet, read on.

There's a spray-in, mostly-adhesive, SEVERELY expanding foam that is used to insulate pipes, especially when sprayed in between the pipe and the edges of a hole in a wall it travels through. That stuff dries hard as hell, but is still somewhat pliable. If you were to spray some of that over the rippled area, you could then sand it down and shape it however you want. I'd be willing to bet that it would hold the camera just fine afterwards.

Another option is Gorilla Glue, or something like it. I don't mean cyanoacrylic glue (common superglue.) But this stuff:

It's one of the most epic bonding agents I've ever used, and I've got it holding my drift mount on. It expands a bit as it dries, so it will squeeze out and be kinda ugly unless you can find a way to cut it off, and you'll need a way to put pressure on it while it dries.

If you go with the spray you would be able to use the 3M tape mounts and probably remove most, if not all, of it later. The Gorilla Glue, however, would have to be directly applied to the mount, and will most likely never come off the helmet without taking the paint with it. That said, that shit ain't gonna drop your camera on the ground either.

thanks for that. great idea with the filling agent. I used that stuff to fill the hollow wheels of my drift trike, works beautifully. I'm not too fussed about keeping the mount on for good. a question with the gorilla glue, have you ever experienced it softening up with the heat?

Nope. The helmet mount hasn't gone through a full summer since I glued it though. I will say that I used it to re-instal the feet on my laptop, which tends to run pretty damn hot. They haven't budged, and the small bit that got on one of the cooling fins is still solid as a rock. Since you're not worried about it being permanent, I'd definitely suggest the glue. It hasn't given me any problems at all, except for being slightly ugly where some oozed out.

The curved mount should easily fit right on the chin bar. My wife has the Vector I & II, I have an RXQ, I believe all the Arai chin bars are shaped the same, except for the new Defiant.

i mounted min on 1 rib, i used the big mount for the HD ghost ( same as the Go pro mount really )

i just pressed extra hard untll the pad got into the groves and its been fine ever since

i mounted min on 1 rib, i used the big mount for the HD ghost ( same as the Go pro mount really )

i just pressed extra hard untll the pad got into the groves and its been fine ever since

Can I ask what helmet you are using? I always seem to "over engineer" things making it a pain later down the track

if all else fails do what I did, use a g-clamp to clamp down the adhesive mount overnight....hasn't moved a mm since.

great minds think alike :lol:

if anything what I did made it harder to slide in the gopro mounts, which I think is better as there is no need to put that rubber thingy ma jig in the space.

post up some pictures once it's set in place.

yeah thats true. i've got it setup so the wind is pushing the head of the clip so if anything it is being locked in even tighter with every gust haha. I'll post some pics up tomorrow morning in a bit of light =]

pretty much in the exact same position as mine, if you can't get the GoPro exactly level, a bit of rotation of the video clip in post production shall fix it
or that bit of "dutch tilt" might be your trademark
