Drift HD WTF!!!

So I've had nothing but trouble out of the Drift HD. When I first got it it seemed ok. I had some audio issues and someone suggested updating the firmware. That helped a little but it still wasn't ideal. You know how it is though. When they fix one problem they create another one.

Now my video quality is crappy. Its blurry when before it was nice and crisp. There's a new setting for indoor or outdoor filming. It defaults to OUT and that seemed to blur things so I set it to IN and its still blurry. So now I have mediocre audio and mediocre video.

So I decided to go to their web site and download an older version of the firmware and see if I could find one that meets my needs. Their web site is gone. So I thought I might get some help from mypov360.com which is where I bought the camera. Their web site is also gone. I guess they sold as many of these suckers as they could and decided to just call it quits when people started expecting them to actually work as advertised.

If anyone can give some suggestions or alternative firmware download links to help fix the audio and video problems I would really appreciate it. Otherwise I think I'm just going to put my Drifts on ebay or something and go back to GoPro. They seem to get at least most of it right.

The Drift HD has been an amazing disappointment!

I've still had no problems with mine, it seems like you either have no problems at all, or a horrendous amount of problems.

Yup, mine's still fine too! As C94 says, it seems to be one or the other!

That's why i always stick to one model behind cutting edge, with everything, then you're always getting the best version of the older tech, which normally proves better than the first version of the new.

My Drift always works fine (touch wood). The Drift innovation's server is down, perhaps they are updating the site.

i have the new drift hd and ive downloaded the lastest firmware and my settings are 720p/ 30fps/ EXP -1/ IN.
But the reason the other drifts are better than the drift hd at the moment is because of their firmware is at there best and the drift hd has only just started getting updates, and i to was going to sell my drift even tho it looked the part, but if you wait for the other update firmware i should improve the drift even more

What i will do now is make a little video about the drift hd settings and etc using my contour hd and post it on hear for you

It's won't be his setting, its just the way drift is. the HD170 had a lot of problems. And the contour + was shocking when it first came out. Unfortunately the companies take too long sorting out the problems, an discover most of them by testing in the field (ie. Put them on sale and see what breaks)

i went on drift innovations and sent them a message saying the video quility isn't very good and that my drift dosn't have night mode on it as i have only just found out, but the other drift camera's has night mode on them which is weared, so i should have a reply back from them tomorrow

Ok. So both sites are back up. I guess they didn't just skip town with everyone's money so to speak. I'm still pissed though because after going out and testing some more I still can't get decent audio or video from this piece of crap camera.

Do you use yours at high speed? I looks like most of your videos you only talk when you're stopped or going slow in traffic. When you pick up the pace you seem to overlay music. I bet if you tried talking at higher speeds you would realize your audio is crap too. Which microphone are you using by the way?

I don't think people should have to wait for firmware updates to make a product work as it should. These companies put out shit packaged as gold and then expect you to wait for them to get it right after they have your money. Its bullshit. Unfortunately they all do it. Why can't they wait until they have the product working properly before they put it on the market and piss people off.

I would really appreciate it if you would post your settings and maybe some test footage to see what kind of results you're getting. That would be very helpful. Thanks!

I'm going to play around with this thing a bit and see if I can get some acceptable results from it. Its frustrating as hell having to test and tweak and test some more. I just want to get out and record and not worry about it. I have limited time to vlog and this just wastes what little time I do have. I'm seriously considering going back to the GoPro and if i do I'll be doing a video trashing the Drift and warning people not to buy it. No one should have to jump through so many hoops to get a product to work. The GoPro isn't perfect for vlogging but at least it works as advertised.

I don't have an external mic for it, I'm using a separate device. Only reason was to save money, since I all ready had the other device. So don't know what the audios like at high speed. I take it you have true the mic under the cheek pad in your helmet??

I got a call from mypov360.com and a PM from Drift Innovations. They both seem eager to help me fix this so hopefully I'll have a working camera soon. It concerned me that when I went to look for firmware updates that both sites were down but they're both back up now so they haven't skipped town!

I have a second camera that I hadn't even tried yet so I'm going to test it and see if I get the same results. I assumed that it was the firmware update that caused my problems since the first camera had a nice sharp image, a little dark but acceptable, when I first got it. I'm not sure if its a hardware problem or a firmware problem but hopefully with a little testing between the two cameras we can figure out what's going on and get it resolved.

The Drift team are very helpful and friendly. Had two questions for them on different occasions and both times received a swift and useful answer.

ive sorted out my video quality on my videos and the reason is that i used to use vegas movie studio platinum 10.0 but now im using windows movie maker and that has made my videos much better quality but i need to mess around with the settings of my camera and what angle on my helmet to put it.

Just ordered one of these b4 reading this forum... Has the firmware improved on the Drift HD, or are ppl still having problems?
there are a few firmware updates now but i think it comes down to the video software people are using. If windows movie maker had more options on it i would use that all the time as when you upload videos using that the quality is really good.

How has your Drift situation been i saw your one video that might have been the make or break it for the Drift. Are you giving up on it or going to continue using it?

I just went on a long trip and they failed me several times. The remote sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I can't hear the beep to tell when it works so that sucks. The battery indicator is crap. It stays green for a while and then suddenly its in the red. It doesn't really help you determine how long the battery will last. The audio situation is a little bit better now that I've moved the mic around and found a decent spot for it.

Honestly I'm still very displeased with the Drift HD. I think I'll keep using them until I can afford to get a GoPro HD2 and then I'll switch.

If Drift could make the beep louder when it starts recording and make the remote more reliable I would keep them because I like the form factor of the Drift but the GoPro never gave me any trouble and at this point I need reliability. I used to put out a video just about every week. Now its sometimes only once a month due to reliability or quality issues with the Drift.
