I have the hero 3 black edition. I have lots of friends that are upgrading. I can't justify the upgrade at this point as the hero 3 does everything I need it too.

aha. If you have the hero 3 black, i wouldn't worry about it too much just yet. Unless you want to make producer like movies on the thing then go for it!

No reason to upgrade ANY camera if it is working and does what you need it to do. The 4 Black can do 4K at 30fps as opposed to 15fps in the 3+ Black, but as most people don't have a 4K display and a lot of YT is watched on a mobile device (going by my analytics anyway) then 1080/60 is probably the highest spec you would realistically need. To me, fps is what makes a vid with a clear picture. 720p is generally quite adequate IMO.

nah i know people using the drift hd170s still so they only reason to upgrade in my book is if they break or if you want the support of a new product

If you record at 1080p60 then no, as the battery life is worse on the 4, and the quality improvement is debatable.

My HD170 works well enough (-ish). Can't really complain based on a £70 refurb that has lasted me nearly two years. As for the content and the editing skills, I really should have advanced a bit more by now lol
Just noticed the new basic GoPro Hero for £99, but I don't think it has an external mic option (according to Lurch). When I upgrade, I will more than likely go back to Action Camera's discount store

Yeh budget go pro doesnt have a removeable batter or a mic port sadly

As everyone else is pointing out, 1080p @ 60fps is more than enough. Unless you want a second viewing angle id stick with what you have.

Yep. I see no reason to upgrade. Maybe the GOPRO 5. Not 4, as y'all pointed out, similiar capability to the 3.

I'd like a camera with battery life and storage capacity for a decent setting (1080/60). Battery size and capacity are linked, so as you say, the pricessing power needs to be more efficient, although the data write speed is a factor in battery life.

I just think a 3+ with more efficient processors and a denser/slightly larger battery would be great for me.
GoPro are going in the wrong direction for what I want with their terrible battery life high end models.
The new GoPro Hero base model is great, that at 1080p60 with its 2h50m battery life, and an added mic and charging port would be perfect.

No, the higher end models have processors and sensors that sap a lot of power even with low demand on them. The Hero 4 Black also has a smaller capacity battery that the previous models.

I have a Gopro 3+ Silver and a Rush 100HD, both accept external mic and both produce 1080 30/60fps which is more than adequate for youtube as the quality once uploaded is always slightly suspect so the 4k this is just a gimmick atm and just for those with more money than sense or just lots of money lol

I'd not say NOT to get a 4. If you have an old camera that is on its last legs, and you are the sort of person who will hang on to a device for its useful life, then buying the latest (subject to funds) isn't necessarily the worst thing you could do. For motovloggers, going from a 3+ to a 4 would be spending for the sake of it, although the 3+ Silver is still currently listed on GoPro's website (was a couple of weeks ago anyway).
Lot to be said for the 60fps, and if you want your content to look the best it can, then investing in a 1080p/60 piece of kit regardless of what make or model wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. YOMV.

I'd say about the 4 of looking at a new camera for vlogging.
Get something that supports 1080p60 and has a decent battery life instead.
