Best 125s (If such things exist) for taller people?

Well, I'm taller than most at 6'3" and I'm looking to get on a 125 on my 17th birthday, however, I have been told that most taller people have difficulty riding a 125 as the frames are usually a lot smaller to fit a wider range of people in this younger age group (whether there's any truth to this I don't really know). So I'm asking if anyone who is above 6ft tall if they have had any experience on 125s and how they found them with regards to long journeys (back pain, knee pain etc.) and how they felt to ride.

With regards to what bikes I have been looking at, I have had a very long look at the Honda Varadero, however it isn't the best looking of the bikes I have in consideration and it is bloody expensive, second hand ones over a decade old still command an asking price of over £1300 and I would rather not take the chance of buying a 125 that's that old when I could get a different one such as a Yamaha CBR for example, for just a couple of hundred pounds more that is only 2 or 3 years old.

Other suggestions of bikes I could get would of course be supermotos (which I don't particularly like) or slightly sportier bikes such as the Derbi Mulhacen, which has a BIG question mark over it's reliability and the GT125R, made by Hyosung, the sister company of suzuki, so it's pretty reliable, but as it's still a largely unknown marque, I have suspicions that finding spare parts or a dealer will be a pretty difficult thing to do.

So, thoughts? Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance guys, AJB.

re Hyosung, read the post on "Why do you hate Hyosungs" to understand that most people dont think they are reliable at all.

Suggest you get a copy of Twist and Go from any reputable magazine seller - this month, the same question is asked, and T&G covers all bikes up to and including A2s, not just scooters, and will give you some good ideas in general about 125s.

The question was from a 6'4 guy, 15 stone, size 13 feet - options proposed were Honda PS125, Gilera Runner 125, Varadero 125, Generic TR125 (becomes KSR TR125 in 2014).

Alternatives include other trail bikes like the TR.

As for comfort, you'll only ever know once you have been on the bike for 45 minutes or so. Everybody is different and each bike may be set up differently.

Thanks for the reply. Where is the post on why people hate Hyosungs? Definitely sounds like its worth a read if it'll show the truth behind these rosy reviews I keep reading, it's just the association with Suzuki that told me that the reliability would be decent, but the reviews seem to be of two extremes, really good, or catastrophically bad, so it seems as though that that paired with the sheer rarity of dealers and parts, that its not really worth it. I suppose I'll wait until I can actually talk to some Hyosung owners to get their opinions.

Thanks for the heads up on those magazines, I'll be sure to pick one up should I come across one in the local newsagents.

suzuki gs500 ... get one! ... unless your licence restricts to 125 or 250? ... o_O

edit .. which i just looked up ... MAN!!! you guys have some suk-ass rules!!

.... solution... move to australia!! ... you can ride up to 660cc bike with power/weight ratio of under 150kw/ton ...

2xCBT days of 3.5 hours + Knowledge test = L plate
after a minimum of 3 months then...
1xadvanced CBT training day including group road ride and obstacle course/training range pass = red P plate.

for riders under 25 years then 1 year on red P .. followed by 2 years on green P
for mature age riders/over 25 .. 1 year on red P .. then full blacks

all of this on a wide ranging list of bikes up to the 660cc & 150kw/tonne rule... you'll love it! .. so ... pack yer bags!! :D

even thinking back to the old days ... L and red P plate limited to 250cc .. L plate 1 year, P plate 1 year .. then black licence...

i think the new rules are better cos there are a lot more complete numpties suddenly wanting a bike licence... some of them dont even have much experience on a bicycle!! ..

but if it was as drastic as the UK .. ?!?!? ... there'd be law breakers even more than now!!

3 points on that!! ...

Only when I'm wearing my Kevlar riding jeans!! Lol :rolleyes:

And

Well ... All the original criminals CAME from England .... We just tried to rehab them over here! ... :p

AND

Not every rider is a proven criminal!! ... Some of them haven't been caught yet!! .... (Especially according to the qld government at the moment!)

Trust me if I could afford it, I'd be outta this country in a flash, it's a bloody political disaster zone :P at some point in the not too distant future (I hope) I'll make a go of travelling the world over about a month, but as it stands, for two years after my 17th, I'm stuck with the motor from a food blender xD But hey, at least it's not a 50!

I had a Hyosung GT125 purely because of its size. I'm 6ft2" and it was still smallish but much more suited to me.

The quality of the bike I had wasn't right up there but it wasn't too bad either. I would say it was half way between typical Chinese and typical Japanese.

I would recommend getting a 250 at least. You may find that 125s are a bit gutless very quickly. If you have your mind made up about a 125 though I'd have to say the Honda CBR125. My friend is about 6'2.5" and rides it comfortably.

Unfortunately Apex I'm restricted to a 125 until my 19th birthday, UK law :( I have had my eyes opened recently to the variation of bikes and what different people seem to find suits them so I guess I won't know which one is big enough or is comfortable enough for me until I can actually get on them.

TheGentlemenBiker, what problems, if any, did you have with the bike?

Consider saving your money by purchasing a used scooter and riding that until you can do 250+ it's not worth the money IMO. This way you can get a real nice bike when that restriction is removed.

Here in Canada you can ride a ZX-14R on your learner's. We call them donors though.

this is a 125 !! :D

I had to replace the battery once but that's nothing. The fork stanchions were not brilliant quality, they started to pit and caused one of the seals to go. The suspension was very firm and the exhaust liked to rot for a laugh. Other than that it was fine if I recall :)

I ride a honda CBR 125 and I'm 6ft1. I've had no problems with it and its really comfy!

You might be better off with a cruiser type though, maybe?

The best 125s are simply put:
Honda Varadero (that is a 600cc bike that somehow got saddled with a 125cc engine :P)
KTM Duke 125 (another 300cc bike that got saddled with a 125cc engine)
The Yamaha YZF-R125

Honda CBR125 (one peg lower than the others, but also much cheaper)

And then there is the rest.
For taller blokes.... my old CBF125 was pretty spacious (I am 5'7'')
We got a south korean brand, "Daelim" which makes a couple of pretty sweet bikes: The Daelim Roadwin, and the Daelim Roadwin R. (google it)
Big-ass 125s, one guy was actually fined cause the cop did not believe his bike was a 125cc. (It has no outside markings saying 125 anywhere).

I saw a few daelims on auto trader and DAMN they look badass, just no word on reliability or whether they spontaneously explode or anything yet, so I'd rather not go down the route f a new brand, although there are a few stunners out there. But, that said, Hyosung is a Korean brand too....

Considering I'll not be getting the bike until very near 2015, I'm massively swayed by the new Yamaha YZF-R125 '15.
